Denna's endless wandering, memory lapses, agelessness, and secret patron suggest she is secretly one of the seven Chandrian.

The theory§

This theory holds that Denna is secretly one of the Chandrian. The case rests on her compulsive wandering and refusal to remain anywhere — read against the Chandrian's curse of perpetual movement — together with her professed memory lapses, an apparent agelessness, and her command of archaic Yilish knots that even present-day Yll has largely lost, all suggesting she is older than she appears. Her retelling of the tale of Lanre casts him as a sympathetic hero rather than a villain, which fits a being protected and kept in power by Haliax. Her constant changing of names is read as the deliberate caution of one who understands that to know a true name is to hold power over its bearer. A pointed refinement identifies Denna with Geisa, named in NOTW as 'fair Geisa, who had a hundred suitors in Belen before the walls fell' and 'the first woman to know the unasked-for touch of man' — a description that matches Denna's youthful beauty and her recurring flight from unwanted male pursuit.

Evidence§

  • So what we know about her is that she’s 1. Always moving 2. Has memory issues.
OP's core observations: constant wandering and memory lapses, read as Chandrian traits.u/Zeebird95
  • Dioc seems to have known her for a while, but he states that she seems to have been mostly unchanged for the majority of his knowing of her. She also knows how to read and tie Yilish knots, which not even present day Yilish know how to do generally.
Agelessness and archaic Yilish knowledge suggest she is older than she appears.u/Zeebird95
  • She tells the tale of Lanre, but does so with the sight and perspective that he is the hero, which if she’s one of the 7. Than he is the one whose been protecting her, and keeping her in power all this time.
Her sympathetic Lanre retelling fits a being protected by Haliax.u/Zeebird95
  • I've had a sneaking suspicion that Denna is actually Geisa, one of the chandrian mentioned in Name of the Wind. The description, while brief fit a bit too well. "Fair Geisa, who had a hundred suitors in Belen before the walls fell. The first woman to know the unasked-for touch of man."
Refinement identifying Denna with Geisa, matching her beauty and flight from male pursuit.u/Sekk122
  • She keeps changing her name and is random in her behavior. Why? Because knowing someone’s name allows you to control that being. Denna hates to be beholden to anyone. So she is aware of this, at least at a subconscious level, and keeps her true nature hidden
Her constant name-changing read as deliberate caution over name-magic.u/chicken_afghani
  • Even if Dioc has know her for a while, and sais she has remained mostly the same, Kvoth mentions that when he met her at the Aolian she had grown from the young girl he met in the road, into a woman. To me that seems to indicate that she is at the very least a mortal.
CounterCounter: Denna visibly aged from girl to woman, indicating mortality.u/Eranu_Onii
  • the only problem that i have with this is that the chandrian have signs that show up whenever they do to announce their presence and i dont remember anything like that happening with denna.
CounterCounter: the Chandrian's tell-tale signs never manifest around Denna.u/das_cthulu
  • I think Kvothe would realize on some level if someone he was that close to was a Chandrian. It is far more likely that Denna’s patron is Chandrian, I think
CounterCounter/refinement: Kvothe would sense it; her patron is the likelier Chandrian.u/RedGyarados2010
