Felurian May Secretly Be One of the Chandrian

fringe identity · popularity 106 · 1 source thread

Felurian's irresistible pull on men could be a Chandrian curse-sign, like Haliax's shadow, marking her as one of the Seven.

About: Felurian, The Chandrian

Also involves: Haliax, Kvothe, The Fae, Nina

The theory§

This theory proposes that Felurian is secretly one of the Chandrian, reasoning that each of the Seven's 'signs' is in truth a curse, as Haliax's perpetually shadowed face is, and that Felurian's overwhelming, unnatural sexual pull on every man could be her own version of such a curse. It connects this to the broken vase the Trebon survivor Nina reconstructed from memory, which depicted figures of the Chandrian and is said to include a woman with some of her clothes removed, and to Felurian's flat refusal to speak of the Seven. The strongest objection is that Felurian herself calls them 'the seven', fears that speaking of them draws their attention, and threatens to harm or banish Kvothe if he names them again, which is hard to square with her being one of them. A further difficulty is that Felurian can dial her 'pull' up and down at will, lessening it so Kvothe can think clearly, which argues that it is a controlled power rather than an involuntary curse. The likelier account is that Felurian predates the Faen realm, dwelt in the Ergen empire during the age of Shaping, and was reshaped or glamoured over aeons until the mask became the face.

Evidence§

  • She’s so much like a man’s erotic dream—could it be a curse?
OP's core hook: Felurian's unnatural allure might be a curse rather than nature.u/Dr30rockinThrones
  • Other posters on this sub have commented that maybe the "signs" of the Chandrian are actually their respective curses placed on them, similar to Haliax's face covered in shadow.
Key premise: Chandrian signs are curses, paralleling Haliax's shadow.u/Dr30rockinThrones
  • Combine this knowledge with the pictures on the vase that Verainia remembered and drew for Kvother. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't one of the images a "woman with some of her clothes off"?
Vase evidence: a partly-disrobed woman among Chandrian images could be Felurian.u/Dr30rockinThrones
  • What if her "curse" is her constant gravitational pull she has on men? Is this one of the reasons why she wouldn't even speak about them to Kvothe
Ties allure-as-curse to her refusal to discuss the Chandrian.u/Dr30rockinThrones
  • It might explain why she's so isolated. Almost like the Ctheah.
Comment refines theory: being cursed Chandrian would explain her isolation.u/bluesy22
  • she refers to them as "the seven" when Kvothe mentions them and threatens to harm Kvothe or drive him away if he speaks of them again. So she knows that the Chandrian can sense when they are spoken of and fears the consequences of that. I don't know she would fear them if she was one of them.
CounterStrongest counter: she fears the Seven as outsiders, unlikely if she were one.u/WuKongPhooey
  • felurian can control the "pull" effect. Remember at one point she lessens it, and kvothe can think clearly for a moment, so I don't think its a curse. It definitely part of her which she can control.
CounterCounter: her pull is a controllable power, not an involuntary curse.u/_TheRatMaster_
  • Felurian predates the Faen Realm. She was a citizen of the Ergen Empire during the period when Shaping was at full throttle … And I feel almost as confident saying that she IS NOT one of the Chandrian. She "will not speak of the Seven."
CounterAlternative account: she predates the Chandrian, reshaped over aeons.u/Azryel19
