Haliax and Encanis Are the Same Being Across Two Mythologies

plausible identity · popularity 713 · 1 source thread

Lanre/Haliax and the demon Encanis share identical traits, suggesting they are one entity seen through different cultural lenses.

About: Haliax, Encanis

Also involves: Selitos, Tehlu, The Chandrian, The Tehlin Church

The theory§

Haliax, the shadow-faced leader of the Chandrian whose history Skarpi tells as the fall of Lanre, and Encanis, the king of demons in Tehlin theology whom Tehlu chases and pins to the iron wheel in Trapis's tale, share a striking set of identical traits: a face shrouded or hidden in darkness, association with the destruction of great cities in the deep past, and a divine pursuer. The theory reads them as one being preserved in two divergent traditions, the Chandrian's leader recast as the Church's demon-king, with Selitos and Tehlu's avatar similarly being one adversary split across the same two mythologies. Supporting detail comes from the Tarbean scene, where Encanis and a follower demon happen upon a guardsman beating Kvothe and are themselves driven off by the arrival of Tehlu and his angels, a moment read as the 'demons' being blamed though innocent. The Adem hold that there are no demons, only very old and very bad things in the world, which would make Encanis not literally a demon but a mortal figure mythologized. A noted limit is Skarpi's account, which distinguishes Iax (the Shaper who stole the moon) from Lanre, so any unification must keep those two separate.

Evidence§

  • I’m pretty sure Lanre/Haliax is also Encanis.
Core claim: Lanre/Haliax and Encanis are the same being.u/sonderman
  • They both have faces shrouded in Darkness, and destroyed many cities a long time ago.
Shared traits offered as evidence: hidden face and ancient destruction of cities.u/sonderman
  • (Unless it’s a common trait)
CounterOP self-flags that shared traits could be coincidental, weakening the case.u/sonderman
  • Celitose could likewise be confounded with Tehlu’s avatar.
Extends theory: the pursuer figures are also one entity split across mythologies.u/sonderman
