Haliax's Shadow Is a Skin Dancer Yoke That Drives the Massacres

fringe mechanism · popularity 81 · 1 source thread

Haliax's shadow may be a skin dancer yoking him, leaving to slaughter everyone whenever his true name is spoken.

About: Haliax, Skin Dancer

Also involves: The Chandrian, Selitos, Myr Tariniel, Kvothe, Bast

The theory§

Haliax, leader of the Chandrian, walks shrouded in a shadow that hides his face and through which no light passes. This theory proposes that the shadow is not Selitos's curse working as magic but a skindancer riding Haliax as a yoke, since skindancers appear as dark shadow or smoke and Haliax is described in old tales as 'yoked to shadow' and 'shadow-hamed,' with shadows that point the wrong way, toward the light. In this reading, Haliax is compelled to manifest whenever his true name is spoken, and the skindancer then leaves him to slaughter every witness, hopping body to body until all are dead, which would account for the patterns at the Mauthen wedding and the massacre of Kvothe's troupe. The children's rhyme's warning 'who to trust? stand alone' is read as caution that anyone present could be possessed. A significant counter is that Haliax speaks and acts with deliberate will, chiding Cinder for indulging in whimsy and choosing when to accompany the Chandrian, which sits poorly with the idea that he is merely a compelled vessel.

Evidence§

  • They’re supposed to look like a dark shadow or smoke when they leave the body, aren’t they?
Establishes skin dancers appear as dark shadow/smoke, matching Haliax's shrouded head.u/BlueVCoin
  • Haliax is yoked to shadow. He is shadow hamed. Shadows pointing towards the light are not shadows. **Haliax is not in control of the shadow**
Core claim: Haliax is yoked/hamed to shadow and not in control of it.u/BlueVCoin
  • Your own name will be turned against you, that you shall have no peace.
Selitos's curse means his name compels him, supporting involuntary manifestation.u/BlueVCoin
  • That’s what they usually do. They switch and switch until everyone is dead.
Skin dancers hop body to body killing all, matching the massacre pattern.u/BlueVCoin
  • You don't know who to trust because a skin dancer could be in anyone and it's best to stand alone.
Reads rhyme's 'stand alone' as warning anyone present could be possessed.u/BlueVCoin
  • the skin dancer leaves Haliax and starts killing everybody, hopping from body to body. The Chandrian try to kill it but fail, until everybody is dead
The mechanism tying it together: skin dancer leaves to slaughter every witness.u/BlueVCoin
  • It doesn't quite make sense to me that Haliax has no choice in the matter and would rather sleep, however, because of his comments when Kvothe first saw him. … This makes it clear that Haliax doesn't always accompany the Chandrian on their assignments, instead he sometimes *chooses* to come along.
CounterCounter: Haliax chooses to come and pursues a goal, unlike a compelled vessel.u/SilasRhodes
  • The shadow is just that. … He has no rest because he is cursed to always hear when people say his name. … stand alone refers to going to waystones.
CounterCounter: shadow and curse are literal; rhyme means waystones, not possession.u/namenamemcnameface
