Kvothe's True Name Is Partly Trapped Inside the Thrice-Locked Box

fringe mechanism · popularity 104 · 1 source thread

Like the moon in the Iax tale, Kvothe's name may be half-held in the Lackless box, explaining Kote.

About: Kvothe, The Lackless Box

Also involves: Naming, The Moon, Iax, Waystone Inn, The Boy Who Stole the Moon

The theory§

This theory proposes that part of Kvothe's true name is sealed inside the thrice-locked chest on the Waystone's shelf, only partially trapped in the same way the moon is half-held between worlds in the tale of Iax and the boy who stole the moon. This partial binding would explain why the innkeeper is sometimes more Kvothe and sometimes the diminished Kote: when he 'picks the time' to act, as he tells Bast he did against the scrael but could not against the soldiers, those are moments his fuller name is within reach. It leans on the book's explicit warnings about the danger of altering one's name, taken as the mechanism behind the Kote persona, and on the narrative singularity of the moon story being the only tale the telling leaves and later returns to. A variant suggests Felurian retained a piece of his name in the Fae to keep a hold on him, and that Kvothe keeps the rest boxed to resist being pulled back across.

Evidence§

  • My theory is that inside of the box is Kvothe’s true name. It’s only partially trapped, just like the moon in the story about Iax.
Core claim: Kvothe's name is partly trapped in the box, like the moon.u/Billy_Vic
  • when talking to bast about killing the Scrael v. Not being able to fight the soldiers. He mentions he picked the time. Which leads me to think there are certain times where he is more Kvothe than Kote.
Evidence: 'picking the time' implies his fuller name is sometimes within reach.u/Billy_Vic
  • We all know he is in hiding for some reason and we’ve all noticed the scene where they discuss the dangers of altering one’s name.
Mechanism: book's warning about altering one's name underpins the Kote persona.u/Billy_Vic
  • it’s the only story we go away from then come back to (to finish) maybe that means nothing. Maybe it means something.
Narrative signal: the moon story is uniquely interrupted and resumed.u/Billy_Vic
  • like the moon being torn between two realms the notion that Kvothe, his soul, or whatever the physical manifestation of his ‘name’ is is trapped in the box is a pretty solid bet.
Refines via deep-name lore: names can be bound, supporting box-trapping.u/luckydrunk_7
  • what if fellurian kept part of his name there so that she would forever have a piece of him. To keep from being pulled back into the fae he might keep part of his name with him trapped in the box?
Variant: Felurian holds part of his name; he boxes the rest to resist the Fae.u/Jetathor2
  • It’d probably help if you tossed in quotes to support your ideas.
CounterCounter: criticizes the theory for lacking textual support.u/Shartriloquist
  • By box I assume you mean the thrice-locked chest and not the Lackless box? My only question is when the box is opened and we look inside, what will we see? What does a True Name look like?
CounterCounter/refine: questions which box, and what a true name would even look like.u/Kit-Carson
