Masks: A Lost Naming Art for Hiding Power and Identity

fringe mechanism · popularity 88 · 1 source thread

A 'mask' is a lost magic that splits a Namer's mind to hide their true power and signs, explaining Chandrian and Kvothe.

About: Naming, The Chandrian, Kvothe

Also involves: Sympathy, The Fae, The Lackless Box, The Amyr, Master Kilvin, Elodin, Bast, Chronicler

The theory§

This theory holds that a "mask" is a forgotten and powerful art by which a Namer can permanently split their own mind, fashioning an alternate self that carries memory but not power, thereby concealing their true nature, their abilities, and their tell-tale signs. It treats the seemings of the Fae as a lesser, related craft and casts University sympathy as a stripped-down derivative of the deeper art of Naming, in line with the principle that to know a thing's true name is to master it. From this it builds answers to several puzzles at once: why the broken innkeeper Kote cannot open his own thrice-locked chest, how the Chandrian hide the signs that would otherwise mark them, and why Kote's powers seem absent. The reasoning draws on the established truth that belief shapes reality in this world — "we all become what we pretend to be" — so that a self worn long enough becomes real. As a counter, the painful, separate cause Bast guards against Kote being asked about suggests the loss of sympathy may be a wound rather than a deliberate disguise.

Evidence§

  • a mask is a magical ability used by Namers, Fae and the Chandran to hide themselves and their powers fundamentally changing how they are perceived by the world. … a Namer would be required to break their mind permanently in two having one half retain all their powers and only sharing memories with the other.
OP's core claim: a mask permanently splits a Namer's mind to hide power.u/PiratePudding
  • There’s a fundamental connection between seeming and being. … We understand how dangerous a mask can be. We all become what we pretend to be.
Thematic foundation: a pretended self worn long enough becomes real.u/PiratePudding
  • Sympathy is a very stripped down version of Naming. … sympathy works because when someone believes two objects are linked, they are adding to each object’s names, fundamentally intertwining the two.
Links sympathy to naming, framing mind-splitting as a Namer's technique.u/PiratePudding
  • What if when Kvothe split his mind he kept all his powers, leaving none for Kote? … why Kote cannot open the thrice locked chest … What if the reason Kote cannot open it is because Kvothe oversaw his body when he sealed the chest leaving it as a puzzle for Kote to unlock much like playing “seek the stone”?
Applies the theory to explain Kote's lost powers and the locked chest.u/PiratePudding
  • The placid innkeeper’s expression was like a shattered mask. Underneath, Kote’s expression was haunted, eyes half in this world, half elsewhere, remembering.
Cited as a moment where the mask slips and Kvothe shows through.u/PiratePudding
  • Perhaps if the Chandrian can make a mask they would be able to hide not only their power but also their signs while blending into normal society?
Extends the theory to explain how the Chandrian conceal their telltale signs.u/PiratePudding
  • I think there is a painful reason that Kvothe can't do sympathy specifically and it is not related to his mask. … Bast told Chronicler not to ask Kvothe about why he couldn't do it … If it was as simple as Kvothe is just wearing a mask … then Bast wouldn't care that much about Chronicler asking questions about it.
CounterCounter: Bast's secrecy implies a painful wound, not a deliberate disguise.u/determanisticLemon
  • I think the Chandrian are more likely using an old magic to help disguise themselves. … there are simply some magics which are otherwise lost to time and memory. Or for Cinder specifically, it could just be glammourie, similar to how Bast hides his hooves.
CounterCounter: Chandrian concealment may be glammourie, not the proposed mask art.u/-Josh
