The Thrice-Locked Chest Is Kvothe's Dead Man's Switch for Self-Resurrection

plausible mechanism · popularity 408 · 1 source thread

Kvothe has hidden his true Name in the chest as a Naming dead man's switch, so that when Kote dies, Kvothe can resurrect himself.

The theory§

The theory proposes that Kvothe has combined his mastery of sympathy, sygaldry, and Naming to build the thrice-locked Roah chest as a mechanism for his own resurrection, a Naming dead man's switch. The premise rests on three established patterns: that within the lore a true Name can return a person from death, as Lyra called Lanre back; that Kvothe consistently learns new skills by scaffolding them onto ones he already has, learning sympathy through memorized verse and sygaldry by setting runes to music; and that he has saved lives by Naming, including his own with Felurian's name and Denna's with the wind's. The chest's three locks demand different and incompatible skill sets, an iron lock, a copper lock with no name, and an unseen lock, so that only someone commanding multiple disciplines could open it. The theory concludes that Kvothe's suppressed Name is sealed inside, so that when Kote is killed the Name can call Kvothe back, explaining why the innkeeper no longer has access to his sympathy, ketan, or music. A frequent objection holds that a literal Name kept in a box would cheapen the lore, and that Kote still performs feats beyond a powerless man.

Evidence§

  • He's definitely going to die, in a serious and tragic sword-through-the-heart, oh Tehlu he's not breathing sort of way. … But that doesn't mean Kvothe has to go too, and I have a theory how it'll happen.
OP's core claim: Kote dies but Kvothe need not, setting up the theory.u/bonzairob
  • First, names. We all know what's in the thrice-locked chest: the V and the H. Kvothe altered his Name. No sympathy, no ketan, no music. But out of all the Naming stories we're told, one stands out: Lyra brings Lanre back from the dead with his name. Kvothe also saves his own life with Felurian's name, save's Denna's with the wind's name, arguably saves Auri by Naming her.
First pillar: a true Name can return someone from death, and Kvothe saves lives by Naming.u/bonzairob
  • Second, transferrable skills. Kvothe learns things by using what he already knows. He learned sympathy rote using the memory for lines and songs that his parents developed in him. He learned sygaldry by setting the runes to music.
Second pillar: Kvothe scaffolds new skills onto existing ones.u/bonzairob
  • Kvothe has taken the "programmable" aspects of sygaldry and sympathy, and mixed them with his understanding of Naming, to create a dead man's switch. When Kote dies, the chest will open, and Kvothe will call himself back from the dead.
Conclusion: the chest is a Naming dead man's switch for self-resurrection.u/bonzairob
  • in order to open the box, you'd need to have at least two skill sets. We know Kvothe has (or at least had) Arcanist skills and mundane lockpicking skills.
Refines: the three locks demand incompatible skill sets, fitting multi-disciplined Kvothe.u/AbacusWizard
  • If Kvothe had locked a part of his name, and consequently a part of what makes him Kvothe, in the box, it stands to reason that his naming/music/sympathy would suffer.
Adds: locking part of his Name explains Kote's lost powers.u/bumfart
  • if that box gets unlocked and a v and h get pulled out like a gd sesame street sketch, I am going to throw the book as hard as I can at the most breakable thing nearby. the story is too brilliant for a literal locking away of a name. … the locking of a "name" has to mean something more.
CounterCounter: a literal Name in a box would cheapen the lore.u/RandomWeatherPattern
  • But Kote does have some musical abilities and some fighting as seen in the first 50 pages of NOTW. Idk why people ignore this
CounterCounter: Kote still shows feats beyond a powerless man.u/RuneScpOrDie
