Tinuë
“Eastern free city tied to 'how's the road to Tinuë?' and the ancient Tinusa”
also known as Tinusa
Appearance§
Tinuë lies on the far eastern side of the map, almost to the mountains and close to the Eld forest, and is a free city of the Four Corners. It is an ordinary inhabited city rather than a ruin, distinct from its possible ancient antecedent Tinusa. The road leading there is the most frequently invoked route in the books.
Description§
Tinuë is a present-day free city on the far eastern side of the Four Corners, lying near the mountains and close to the Eld. It is commonly identified with Tinusa, one of the cities named in Skarpi's tale of the Ergen empire. The city's name carries unusual weight in everyday speech: the question "How is the road to Tinuë?" functions as an idiom meaning roughly "How's life?", and Kvothe uses it at the Waystone Inn to test Chronicler, who fails to recognize it. The accent on Tinuë, the only such accent in the books, instructs that both vowels be pronounced separately. Denna names Tinuë among the cities she has visited during her research. The Lackless lands are said to have once encompassed Modeg and Tinuë, which Lackless lost in a bloodless rebellion, and the Maer sends men to scout the lands around Tinuë.
