The Cthaeh Has Steered Kvothe's Whole Life Toward Disaster
Because the Cthaeh sees all of time, meeting it at all means it engineered Kvothe's path from birth.
About: The Cthaeh, Kvothe
Also involves: Felurian, Denna, Chronicler, Bast, Haliax, Iax, Newarre, Ademre, Maer Lerand Alveron, Meluan Lackless
The theory§
Because the Cthaeh sees the whole of time and answers only with words that nudge events toward the maximum disaster, the theory argues that the fact Kvothe meets it at all proves it has been steering his life since birth: there is no meeting the Cthaeh by accident, so the encounter was foreseen and arranged. Everything Kvothe does after the Cthaeh—losing part of Felurian, training in Ademre, killing the false troupers, ruining his standing with the Maer by insulting Meluan—should therefore be re-examined as the fruit of its influence. A stronger formulation holds the Cthaeh did not bite Kvothe precisely because he was already on the most destructive path; its earlier 'darts', launched at others long before, may have been designed to set Kvothe in opposition to the Chandrian—placing Abenthy in his life so Arliden's song grew accurate enough to get the troupe murdered, then letting Kvothe's own talent do the rest. A further extension supposes that, since the Cthaeh can perceive Kvothe recounting the encounter to Chronicler and Bast, it could be manipulating his listeners through the very retelling.
Evidence§
I think it is very important for us to identify what hapenned before and **AFTER Kvothe meets the Cthaeh**. Since this creature has somekind of **"destiny curse"** we need to remember the things that Kvothe did after that encounter
OP frames the encounter as a turning point with a destiny curse worth re-examining. — u/navispacialThis must be important if Cthaeh is strong enough to be wanted by Lanre and Iax. What Kvothe did and is doing that he ended up in Newarre?
OP ties the Cthaeh's power and significance to Kvothe's eventual downfall in Newarre. — u/navispacialbecause Kvothe met the Cthaeh at all, that the Cthaeh has been manipulating his life from the day he was born. … There is no such thing as meeting the Cthaeh by accident. It knew Kvothe was coming so in a sense it planned for it to happen no matter what.
Core claim: meeting the Cthaeh at all proves lifelong manipulation; no accidental encounter. — u/Sandal-HatYou're missing 2 important WMF events in your list. Killing the false troupers and ruining things with Alveron by insulting Meluan
Adds further post-Cthaeh disasters to re-examine as products of its influence. — u/simplerhythmI also wonder if the Cthaeh is aware it is in Kvothe's story and thus manipulating Chronicler/Bast. … it can see all across time simultaneously … The Cthaeh could, in theory, be using its position in a told story to manipulate those hearing it. Bast certainly has a strong reaction.
Extends manipulation to the present retelling, reaching Chronicler and Bast through the frame story. — u/_snout_I don't think the Cthaeh had very much influence on Kvothe himself, but I think all of the Cthaeh's past influences have been designed TO set in motion what Kvothe has already done
Refines theory: influence ran through earlier targets, not Kvothe directly. — u/RagnanicciThe Cthaeh likes to bite people, and certainly had every opportunity to bite Kvothe but didn't. Why? Because Kvothe is already on the most destructive path.
Stronger formulation: the Cthaeh spared Kvothe because he was already maximally destructive. — u/Ragnaniccihe mainly reiterated and reminded Kvothe about Cinder killing his parents and all the information about Denna's beatings. Kvothe was already on a path to discover the Chandrian
CounterCounter: the Cthaeh only reinforced an existing path rather than originating it. — u/fearnodarkness1
