Kvothe Unconsciously Names His Horse, Revealing His Naming Gift
Kvothe's 'mistaken' Siaru name 'One Sock' truly described the horse's hidden white hoof, marking early Naming.
Also involves: Auri, Elodin, Trebon
The theory§
Buying a mount to ride to Trebon at the end of his first telling, Kvothe haggles over a horse the seller prizes for being wholly black, a color worth a fortune. As he circles the animal trying to settle on a fitting name, he attempts the Siaru word for 'twilight' but instead says 'One Sock,' and the seller abruptly drops his price, believing Kvothe has spotted the deception, the horse in fact has a single white hoof the seller had hidden. The theory reads this not as a mistake but as Kvothe's sleeping mind Naming truly: seeing the deep shape of a thing and calling it by what it is, even while his waking mind believes he is saying something else. It parallels his naming of Auri, after which Elodin, who likely knows her true name, consents at last to teach Kvothe Naming. A recurring pattern emerges, that Kvothe lands on true names while rambling and mistaken about their meaning, also seen when he guesses fragments of Cinder's name (Feran, Forue, Fordale) while taunting Denna's patron, and in his knack for guessing people's nicknames.
Evidence§
according to the seller, it would be worth a fortune just for the color. He says this because he claims the horse is completely black … Of course, we find out later that this is untrue, and that the horse actually has 1 white hoof.
Sets up the seller's deception and the hidden white hoof at the theory's core. — u/Knack-JackHe tries to name it "twilight” in Siaru, but goofs it up, and actually says "One sock". The seller thinks that Kvothe has seen through the deception and suddenly drops the price.
Core observation: the slip 'One Sock' truly described the horse, panicking the seller. — u/Knack-JackBecause Kvothe is a "Namer," unknown to even himself, he was able to choose a name that actually described the horse. … I don't think it was an accident by any means, but instead one of the first times he was a Master Namer.
OP's central claim: the mistake was sleeping-mind Naming, not chance. — u/Knack-Jackthe only other instance that comes to mind is when he names Auri. What do you think?
OP offers the Auri naming as a parallel instance of true naming. — u/Knack-JackNotice that after Elodin hears him name her Auri, he consents to teach Kvothe naming. Elodin knows her and probably knows her true name, and is impressed by Kvothe's attempt at naming.
Refines the Auri parallel: Elodin's reaction validates Kvothe's naming gift. — u/RedeemedbyXAnother *very* important one to keep in mind is Kvothe trying to guess the name of Denna's patron. There is some interesting evidence suggesting that [Ash could be none other than Cinder.
Adds another case of Kvothe landing on true names while guessing. — u/RedeemedbyXHe's good at guessing people's nicknames, too. Nan, the girl who saw the vase. Also, the girl the fake troop kidnapped who was frozen with trauma.
Broadens the pattern to Kvothe's knack for guessing nicknames. — u/blackcatheaddeskhow could he subconsciously use a word he didn't really know the meaning of correctly, especially when it was against his intent.
CounterCounter: questions how he could name truly with a word he misunderstood. — u/siamonsez
