The Cthaeh's Joke: 'Stick by the Maer' Literally Means the Lackless Box

plausible symbolism · popularity 67 · 1 source thread

The Cthaeh's pun on 'stick by the Maer' refers to the Lackless box, carved from Cthaeh-tree wood.

About: The Cthaeh, The Lackless Box

Also involves: Maer Lerand Alveron, Kvothe, The Amyr, Meluan Lackless, The Doors of Stone

The theory§

When Kvothe meets the Cthaeh, it promises a joke he will only later understand, embedded in the line 'Stick by the Maer and he will lead you to their door.' This theory reads 'stick' literally: the object the Maer holds, by way of his marriage to Meluan, is the Lackless box, and the box is carved from wood that smells exactly as the Cthaeh's tree does, of smoke and spice and leather and lemon. If the box was cut from a branch of the Cthaeh-tree, it is in plain truth a stick, and the Cthaeh, who speaks with the cruel literalism of a genie, is calling a wooden box a stick that will lead Kvothe to a door he must open. Competing readings keep the line a double entendre but relocate the joke: to Bredon, a courtier who walks with a stick; to the word 'door', echoing the Lackless rhyme and the Doors of Stone; or to the grim truth that the Amyr are reachable only past the doors of stone, so following the Maer leads Kvothe toward death.

Evidence§

  • what's the joke here? I think the joke lies in the phrase *Stick by the Maer and he will lead you to their door.* What is the *stick* by the Maer? It's Meluan's Lackless box.
OP's core claim: the 'stick' is literally Meluan's Lackless box.u/un_acceptable
  • The Lackless box that Meluan has is made out of wood that smells the same as the Cthaeh tree.
Key supporting observation linking box to the Cthaeh-tree.u/un_acceptable
  • It was like smoke and spice and leather and lemon.
Book description of the Cthaeh, cited by OP for the smell match.u/un_acceptable
  • it seemed to be a spicewood. It smelled faintly of ... something. A familiar smell I couldn't quite put my finger on. I lowered my face to its surface and breathed deeply through my nose, something almost like lemon.
Book description of the Lackless box matching the tree's lemon scent.u/un_acceptable
  • The Lackless box was carved from a broken branch, or stick. The Lackless box is a key, and it will lead Kvothe to a door.
Completes chain: box is a stick and a key leading to a door.u/un_acceptable
  • I took it as Bredon, since he uses a walking stick, and is a part of the Maer’s court. “Stick by the Maer”.
CounterCounter-reading: 'stick' is Bredon, the courtier with a walking stick.u/King_Esot3ric
  • But I’m not so sure about the stick and the Lackless box…maybe? My doubt is just because Kvothe never laughs when he opens the box.
CounterCounter: Kvothe doesn't laugh opening the box, as the Cthaeh promised.u/LadyShaSha
  • I think the "joke" is in the word "door." Remember the child's rhyme that referenced the Lackless Door.
Refines/relocates joke to 'door' echoing the Lackless rhyme.u/crimsonandred88
