Bast's 'Perfect Ears' Comment Hints at Denna's Gift for True Listening

plausible symbolism · popularity 302 · 1 source thread

Bast calling Denna's ears 'perfect' may signal a Fae-perceived gift for true listening, not mere physical beauty.

About: Denna, Bast

Also involves: Kvothe

The theory§

When Kote struggles to describe Denna, Bast interjects that he has met her and that she had 'perfect ears'. The theory reads this Fae compliment as more than a remark on physical beauty: it names an extraordinary gift for true, deep listening. Denna's talents bear this out, she sings Sir Savien beside Kvothe after hearing the song only once or twice, learns instruments and composes with uncanny intuition, hears the Maer and Meluan approaching before Kvothe's own trained ears do, mimics the swineherd's accent after moments, and renders Simmon and Wilem as a boy splashing in a puddle and a stone in deep water. She even seems to listen to inanimate things, attributing memory and feeling to a thrown stone by the water. Since the Fae perceive the world through a different lens, Bast may be recognising in her an innate sensitivity that ordinary human hearing does not possess.

Evidence§

  • when Kote is describing Denna but can't get the words right bast says that he has met her and describes her as having "perfect ears"
Sets up the core observation: Bast's Fae compliment about Denna's ears.u/Ferula--
  • I think that was talking about a knack for true listening as she is really good at actual listening like when she can recite the song she only hears twice
OP's central claim: perfect ears means a gift for true listening, evidenced by her recall.u/Ferula--
  • We know the Fea interact differently with the world so I wonder if Bast is meaning somthing different with his words.
OP grounds the reading in Fae perceiving the world differently.u/Ferula--
  • She listens to the stone, too. … “How did you learn to listen to stones?” “You'd be amazed the things you hear if only you take time to listen.”
Adds evidence: Denna listens even to inanimate things, supporting a deeper listening gift.u/PlaytheBoard
  • Bast said she had perfect ears. —a few pages later Kvothe tells Denna she has an incredible ear (for memorizing the song)
Refines theory: text echoes the 'ear' compliment, reinforcing listening interpretation.u/relishlife
  • In the first interaction Kvothe has with Denna in Imre, she hints that she often gets complimented on her ears
Adds supporting detail that Denna's ears draw repeated comment in-story.u/chicken_afghani
  • She doesn't know when Kvothe is lying. She thought he was lying about being able to take her to the Maer's gardens
CounterCounter: rebuts OP's claim that Denna detects Kvothe's lies.u/Caimthehero
  • I thought that it was just Kote adding in a bit of his current surroundings into the story of the past.
CounterCounter: the 'perfect ears' line may be Kote's narrative embellishment, not a real clue.u/relishlife
