Denna Is the Reincarnated or Immortal Daughter of Lanre and Lyra

fringe identity · popularity 234 · 1 source thread

Denna is Lanre and Lyra's daughter: her shifting name, nightmares, and defence of Lanre all stem from her hidden heritage.

About: Denna, Lyra

Also involves: Haliax, Cinder, Selitos, Myr Tariniel, Kvothe

The theory§

This theory holds that Denna is the surviving daughter of Lanre and Lyra, and that her defining traits are the residue of that buried inheritance. Her chronic sleeplessness and nightmares are read as repressed memories of Lyra's death and Lanre's betrayal of Myr Tariniel, accounting for her instinctive sympathy for Lanre and the bitter argument it provokes with Kvothe over how the story should be sung. Her true name is held to be perpetually shifting, leaving her rootless and prone to tears, and that same instability is offered as the reason Haliax cannot find his child: he labours under the curse Selitos laid on him. Cinder, moving through the world as Master Ash, is said to have stumbled upon her and to abuse her as a way of striking at Haliax. The theory's central weakness is that it requires Denna to be supernaturally long-lived or reincarnated across thousands of years, a leap unsupported by anything in the text and complicated by the fact that Denna handles iron and shows no mark of the Fae.

Evidence§

  • Denna is the daughter of Lanre and Lyra. She has problems sleeping like her father.
Core claim: Denna inherits Lanre's sleeplessness as evidence of parentage.u/SourceIsMyAss
  • Her nightmares are repressed memories of what happened to her parents, Lyra dying and Lanre betraying Myr Tariniel. This is why she thinks Lanre is the good guy and had a big argument with Kvothe about it.
Nightmares as buried memory explaining her sympathy for Lanre and clash with Kvothe.u/SourceIsMyAss
  • Haliax is trying to find his daughter but can't because of the curse Selitos put on him. And also because her name is shifting, like not her "calling name" but her true name, which may be responsible for why she always cries and lacks direction in life.
Shifting true name explains rootlessness and why Haliax cannot locate her.u/SourceIsMyAss
  • Cinder as master Ash stumbles upon her and abuses her to get revenge on Haliax for humiliating him.
Cinder/Master Ash abuses Denna to strike at Haliax.u/SourceIsMyAss
  • Denna is thousands of years old?
CounterCounter: theory requires implausible supernatural lifespan.u/sdurflinger
  • Wouldn't that make Denna one of The Folk? A member of the Faen? Has she ever been mentioned touching iron?
CounterCounter: Fae parentage implied, yet no sign she is harmed by iron.u/Knightmareco
  • The fact that she’s changing her name may mean she doesn’t want to be found.
Refines name-shifting as deliberate choice rather than true-name instability.u/vercertorix
  • Denna isn’t constantly crying. What did you mean by that? She always tries to hide her tears from Kvothe.
CounterCounter: disputes the 'always cries' premise underpinning the name argument.u/countryguy-georgia
