Denna's mysterious patron is Haliax/Lanre, and Denna herself was placed in Kvothe's life to spy on and betray him.

About: Denna, Haliax, Kvothe

The theory§

This theory holds that Denna's unnamed patron is Haliax, and that Denna was deliberately placed in Kvothe's life as a watcher who will become the betrayer Kvothe alludes to in his frame-story litany of trouping, loving, trusting, and being betrayed. The chief supports are textual: while loosened by the plum bob, Denna tells Kvothe it is her 'job to notice things about you,' and after the Trebon wedding her unexplained return to the farm, though she knew her own master was unharmed, reads as her checking what Kvothe had learned. The patron's choice of a seven-stringed lyre for her echoes the name Lyra, and since names carry weight, the resemblance is offered as a thread back to Lanre's lost wife. The theory grants that the Amyr, through Lorren, who knows of Kvothe's father, might instead be the watchers, but judges a planted Denna the likelier source of the betrayal.

Evidence§

  • Kvothe recounts his life to Chronicler in NoTW and says he was betrayed
Frame-story premise: Kvothe states he was betrayed, motivating the search for the betrayer.u/SalvatoreParadise
  • I'm highly convinced that Denna's patron is Haliax/Lanre, and she was planted into Kvothe's life.
OP's core claim: Denna's patron is Haliax and she was planted to betray.u/SalvatoreParadise
  • Ch 77 - "Well it's my job to notice things about you" -Denna, partially dennered.
Key evidence: dennered Denna admits noticing things about Kvothe, implying a watcher role.u/SalvatoreParadise
  • She knew her master was safe and wasnt harmed during the wedding, so why did she go back to the farm? To see what Kvothe knew.
Trebon inconsistency: her unexplained return to the farm reads as checking what Kvothe learned.u/SalvatoreParadise
  • we learn here that Denna's patron is the one that chose her instrument, the 7 stringed lyre (Lyra). Just a similarity in name, but names are important.
    Name-thread: patron chose a seven-stringed lyre, echoing Lanre's lost wife Lyra.u/SalvatoreParadise
  • It's also possible the Amyr are watching him. Master Lorren knows of Kvothe's father … the Amyr would do anything for justice.
OP's own alternative: the Amyr via Lorren could be the watchers instead.u/SalvatoreParadise
  • In rebuttal to your "it's my job to watch you" I present the time she told Kvothe her patron knows nothing of him … it's like telling your loved one "it's my job to take care of you"
CounterCounter: Denna said her patron knows nothing of Kvothe; the line may be affectionate, not surveillance.u/addytivity
  • I don't think anyone planted Denna in Kvothe's life (except maybe fate) she seems to have her own issues
CounterCounter: rejects the planted-Denna premise, attributing her behavior to her own troubles.u/CoffeeJoe71
  • I'd be willing to lay good money that it's Denna … Kvothe says this early on and it fits.
Support: another poster backs Denna as the betrayer fitting the frame litany.u/LNinefingers
