fringe timeline · popularity 69 · 1 source thread

Book 3's plot assembled from existing clues: fifteen mysteries it must resolve and how they connect.

About: The Doors of Stone

Also involves: Kvothe, The Chandrian, The Amyr, Iax, Haliax, Selitos, The Lackless Box, Encanis, Tehlu, Newarre, Bast, Denna, Meluan Lackless, Severen, The Four-Plate Door, Arielle

The theory§

This is a reconstructed outline of The Doors of Stone, assembled almost entirely from clues already present in the published books, interviews, and official material rather than invented elements. It enumerates the major unresolved threads the conclusion must close, including how Kvothe became the innkeeper Kote in Newarre, the fate and nature of the Amyr, the contents of the Lackless box, and what lies behind the doors of stone. Its central claims are that the Chandrian erase all record of themselves to escape Selitos's name-curse, that Iax is imprisoned behind the four-plate door at the University, and that Trapis's Encanis is a Tehlin-warped retelling of Iax with Tehlu standing in for Lanre. It also tracks where Kvothe might gather the rings named in his story (stone, iron, blood, and wind) and proposes a heist-shaped Archives arc, possibly implicating Devi, that ends in Kvothe's expulsion.

Evidence§

  • For this, I've tried to incorporate as few original elements as possible, using only what we can logically surmise from the existing books, Interviews, and other official media.
OP's method: outline reconstructed from existing clues, not invented elements.u/TacticalDo
  • Who is Encanis – A warped version of Iax, by the Tehlin church, with Tehlu playing the role of Lanre.
Core claim: Encanis is a Tehlin-warped retelling of Iax, Tehlu standing in for Lanre.u/TacticalDo
  • to destroy all records of themselves … Ultimately they want free of the curse, if Iax can possibly break the curse for them then they are inclined to set him free
Chandrian motive: erase records and free Iax to break Selitos's curse.u/TacticalDo
  • they need the Loeclos box, more importantly what's inside - this was why they waylaid the tax collectors between Severen and the Lackless estates, and also why they killed Acuelias Lackless.
Links Chandrian goal to the Lackless box and explains the tax-collector raids.u/TacticalDo
  • Also, I'm sure that the door was there first. They didn't put it inside the university, the university was put around it.
Refines the four-plate-door thread: University built around a pre-existing door.u/danielsaid
  • My theory is that Devi breaks in on her own using Kvothe's lamp, but she drops in when she's discovered and makes her escape, thus implicating Kvothe for the break-in even though he wasn't there.
Refines the heist arc: Devi breaks in alone, framing Kvothe for the fire.u/elihu
  • Auri has a ring of amber. She was thinking of giving it as a gift to Kvothe but gave him something else instead.
Adds book-based support for the amber-ring detail in the rings thread.u/milbader
  • I can't imagine Kvothe dealing with Hemme, and you didn't explain how he could. … I don't think Devi is an antagonist. That hole section felt out of character and forced, to me.
CounterCounter: Hemme subplot and Devi-as-antagonist feel forced and unexplained.u/Imaterd005
  • I still think the Chandrian are good
CounterCounter to the premise that the Chandrian are villains seeking to free Iax.u/Siisyphus

Tier reasoning§

kept: makes specific falsifiable lore claims (Iax behind door, Encanis=Iax), not generic discussion; fringe holds
